Akshay-1, Hrithik-0; Rustom races ahead of Mohenjo Daro

It's not over yet, but Tinu Suresh Desai's Rustom has opened a big lead over Ashutosh Gowariker's Mohenjo Daro on the opening day of the box-office clash. At the time of going online--- the trade predicts Rs 12-13 crore for the Akshay Kumar starrer by the end of the day, while it's just Rs 6-7 crore for the Hrithik one; a few of them even see Rustom touching Rs 15 crore and Mohenjo Daro coming close to Rs 10 crore. So yeah, let's wait and watch- but the writing on the wall so far is clear that the first round of this fight belongs to Rustom.

Leading distributor Hemant Shah says, "People are not liking Mohenjo Daro, they say it's too slow. I don't see it collecting more than Rs 6-7 crore by the end of the day. On the other hand, Rustom has garnered a very good response at the ticket windows."

A source (name withheld on request) says, "Despite being shortchanged on the single screen front and receiving mixed reviews, Rustom is making the the right noises. This implies that it will sustain, and it's a great victory."

Let's not forget here that Rustom was deprived of single screens in many parts of the country, courtesy Disney UTV who refused to bend despite Rustom distributor moving mountains to convince them to share equal space with him.

We called up single screen Premiere (Parel), whose booking clerk said, "Public bahut kam aa rahi hai Mohenjo , lekin mujhe nahin pata aisa kyun ho raha hai."

Ensorsing Shah's opinion, trade analyst Amod Mehra told SpotboyE.com, "Mohenjo Daro is a very outdated, irrelevant story which is difficult to connect with the audience.
As for Rustom, it's the Nanavati case adaptation told in a light-hearted entertaining manner; it keeps the audience glued. Mohenjo Daro opened very poorly in the morning in contrast to Rustom which got off to a rousing start all over India. Rustom is a winner and Mohenjo Daro has bleak chances at the box-office."

Another trade analyst Komal Nahata says, "I see Rustom amassing Rs 13-15 crore but Mohenjo Daro will collect around Rs 6-7 crore. Mohenjo Daro will go down as one of the biggest disasters in history, but Rustom is a 100 crore film."

According to film critic-columnist Indu MIrani (her column appears on SpotboyE.com every
Wednesday), "Rustom has a Nanavati case storyline which tends to get a bit diluted because too many tracks have been added to it. As for Mohenjo Daro, it's a very ancient story. No history at all, and you don't come out educated. Ashutosh's Jodhaa Akbar too had no history but he put their romance together very nicely. The cricket match in his Lagaan was thrilling. And, his Swades gave you a sense of patriotism."

Obviously, we spoke to Aksar too. After all, the man has had the last laugh. Said Aksar, "Yes, I am very happy. I expected a glorious start to Rustom and my expectation has been met with," and then added, "Mohenjo Daro might pick up and do well. Miracles do happen in our industry."

On the other hand, multiplexes too haven't given up on Mohenjo Daro. Rahul Kamble from PVR Icon (AndherI) says, "We are expecting better results for Mohenjo Daro towards the night shows, but so far it has got us only 25 per cent occupancy. On the other hand, Rustom has got us 45 per cent occupancy. So yeah, people are opting for Rustom on Day 1. But I am sure that they will see Mohenjo Daro too once they're done with Rustom."
